Calais to Groningen

Morning briefing in Calais over breakfast before setting off on your long trip north by crossing into Belgium, maybe stopping off at one of the many military sites en-route.

The next border crossing takes you into Holland, where you can have lunch by the Zaan River, with 6 authentic and fully operational windmills, or stock up on cheese in the town of Edam. The first bridge of the trip is a mere 20 miles long across the Wadden Sea into Northern Holland.

Rally HQ tonight is the beautiful canal town of Groningen, reminiscent of a mini Amsterdam. Enjoy a traditional Dutch meal by the canal side, swapping stories of day one’s adventures.

Groningen to Vejle Fjord

From Holland, cross into northern Germany, where you can choose from a number of different routes up into Denmark. Visit the quaint town of Bourtange, a well-preserved fortification, built in the 1500’s and surrounded by a moat and drawbridges. Or head up to Kiel to go onboard a WWII U-boat – the only one left in the world and a truly unique experience.

Reach Denmark by late afternoon and cruise along peaceful roads as you drive further north to the beautiful Sinatur hotel near Vejle Fjord. Here you will enjoy a Danish meal in a traditional 15th-century manor house, amongst an idyllic setting that provides the very definition of “Hygge” (- a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special).

Vejle Fjord to Gothenburg

Today is a day of discovery – stop for coffee in the historical town of Odense, the beautiful home of Hans Christian Andersen, before taking a coastal trail to seek out small fishing villages, crossing between islands on huge bridges spanning the fjords below.

En route you can stop at Egeskov Castle – a 15th Century expanse complete with a moat, drawbridge, deer herd and maze. Built on a foundation of thousands of upright oak trunks, it’s highlight is Titania’s Palace, a mesmerising doll house filled with miniature works of art including tapestries, hand carved mahogany furniture and tiny glass mosaics. Or perhaps Trelleborg Viking Remains might be of interest – the best of the four Viking ring fortresses in Denmark, dating back 980 AD.

You might instead head to the colourful city of Copenhagen for lunch before crossing the famous 8-mile long Øresund Bridge which links Denmark and Sweden (as all “The Bridge” fans will be very aware of…) A drive up the coastline of south west Sweden takes you past the beach towns of Halmstad, Varberg and Falkenberg.

Your final night is in the revived post-industrial City of Gothenburg, now one of Europe’s most sought-after destinations, where you will celebrate your epic journey.
